HOW TO USE THIS WEBSITE
In these pages, the second half of an online biography of Evelyn Waugh is taking shape, where several phases of Waugh's life are given enough space so that the relevant - older - Evelyn can be fully encountered.
Essays are grouped into CAPITALISED sections in the menu to the left. Amongst these are:
SHORTS
Small bits. Funny. Or scary. Click on a photo to get a short, sharp literary shock.

WORLD WAUGH TWO
This is the story of Evelyn Waugh, soldier, from 1940 to 1945. Though it took him from 1950 to 1962 to tell it. It's this section I'm adding to from August, 2022..

PIERS COURT PAPERS
Meticulous. Insightful. Endless (I began them in 2013: the layering may continue ad infinitum). A chance to pick 'n' click your way into a main phase of Waugh's life.

BRIDESHEAD FESTIVAL
This was meant to happen at Castle Howard in summer, 2020, but Covid has put paid to that. I've carried on with a study of those friends that Evelyn made at Oxford and who went on to write books themselves. These include Richard Plunket Greene, Patrick Balfour, Robert Byron, Brian Howard, Cyril Connolly, Peter Quennell, Harold Acton, Anthony Powell, Graham Greene and Henry Yorke. This section is partly written by Nancy Mitford.
ENDINGS
These are chapters that feel better here than at the beginning of the site. And better here than at the end of the younger Evelyn website.
